The Milton Berle Show

September 30, 2008 at 2:29 pm (Uncategorized)

I found the video that we watched in class to be very unique. First of all, the show was only sponsored by one product and the product was seen somehow throughout the whole show. Nowadays, TV shows are sponsored by a bunch of companies, which are shown in commercials. I definitely liked the incorporation of the product into the show rather than having to watch commercial breaks.

The show also references names and other things in jokes that we don’t even know now. You can definitely tell it was a “period” show, much of the way that Vaudeville was (since it came from there). The people in the audience got all the jokes but they were also familiar with Vaudeville. Someone such as myself, who never heard of Vaudeville until now, wouldn’t get half of the jokes that were told.

I also liked that there was a break from the comedy, i.e. the singers. It gives the audience a diverse show and it helps the singer get publicity.

Overall, I thought the show was enjoyable even though it is a bit outdated. In my opinion, they should bring back more shows like this…clean comedy. Today, all we have is vulgarity, and I admit, I listen to it, but it’s the only kind of comedy out there anymore. Sometimes, I don’t understand why people are attracted to vulgarity and sexual references. The world could definitely do without it.

Response to “Greys Anatomy Coming Back a Winner”

September 28, 2008 at 9:12 pm (Uncategorized)

I can’t say that I’m surprised that Greys was number one last Thursday with the 2 hour season premiere. The way that last season ended was enough to leave the viewers craving more. I’m happy that Greys is doing so well since it is my favorite show. Actually, the only show that I watch.

As I continued reading this article, it went on to mention other channels and their shows and how they were ranked compared to Greys. Survivor was the next in the lead, which is kind of surprising to me since it’s only been on forever. “My Name is Earl” and “The Office” came up third, but I can’t really talk much about them since I’ve never seen either.

Overall, Greys seems to be keeping good storylines…hence why they are doing so well.

Response to Digital Transition Answers

September 23, 2008 at 1:47 am (Uncategorized)

The topic of this blog seems to be the transition of analog to digital in Texas. The author states a few channels and what is happening with them as far as what channel they will be broadcasting from in the near future.

It seems believable enough to me that what he is stating is the truth. I have no questions in my mind about it. But the only real way to find out if it is true would be to look it up another way from a more credible source, i.e. a newspaper.

“Empire of the Air”

September 10, 2008 at 8:34 pm (Uncategorized)

To me, empire of the air means the period of time when the world was completely obsessed with radio waves and/or radio.

I thought the video we watched about the invention of the radio was very interesting. I definitely didn’t know that there were 3 people involved with it’s creation. My overall impression of the video was that there seemed to be a lot of rivalry and failure involved in the creation of radio. I didn’t understand why someone like Deforest didn’t test out his inventions before applying for a patent or make sure that a business that he was trying to start would actually last.

I do think that radio was a huge stepping stone for technology and without it, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

Interest in TV is Diminishing

September 3, 2008 at 9:17 pm (Uncategorized)

I find it interesting that when we were kids, TV was all the rage and one couldn’t wait to get home from school to watch his/her favorite cartoon. We ever used to fight over the remote! Now, with all the technology, one doesn’t have to worry about watching something when it comes on the first time–you can DVR it and fast forward through commercials.

Since becoming an adult, my TV interests have diminished to the point of almost non-existence. Sure, I like to catch the latest episode of Greys Anatomy, which is my favorite show, but if for some reason I can’t watch it, I can always go to ABC.com where they post the episodes without fail–plus there are limited commercials, 30 seconds long at most.

The internet has come a long way. You don’t even have to watch TV if you don’t want to because everything can be found one way or another online or on DVD.

It was mentioned in class that the TV age group is focused now on people ages 55 and older. I think this is because this group of people are more settled. They prefer to spend a lazt afternoon in front of the TV with their family. They aren’t as active as they were when they were young so in a sense, it suits them. In this day and age, everything is about being healthy, and lounging around in front of the TV just isn’t healthy.
