The Milton Berle Show
I found the video that we watched in class to be very unique. First of all, the show was only sponsored by one product and the product was seen somehow throughout the whole show. Nowadays, TV shows are sponsored by a bunch of companies, which are shown in commercials. I definitely liked the incorporation of the product into the show rather than having to watch commercial breaks.
The show also references names and other things in jokes that we don’t even know now. You can definitely tell it was a “period” show, much of the way that Vaudeville was (since it came from there). The people in the audience got all the jokes but they were also familiar with Vaudeville. Someone such as myself, who never heard of Vaudeville until now, wouldn’t get half of the jokes that were told.
I also liked that there was a break from the comedy, i.e. the singers. It gives the audience a diverse show and it helps the singer get publicity.
Overall, I thought the show was enjoyable even though it is a bit outdated. In my opinion, they should bring back more shows like this…clean comedy. Today, all we have is vulgarity, and I admit, I listen to it, but it’s the only kind of comedy out there anymore. Sometimes, I don’t understand why people are attracted to vulgarity and sexual references. The world could definitely do without it.
